Where people shine

Department Name:

Mrs E. Read

Department description:

Learning a language gives students the opportunity to explore the outside world and holds the key to international travel, careers and a wider understanding and appreciation of the world we live in. Living just 27 miles from the gateway to Europe students have Europe at their fingertips!

During the course students will be given the opportunity to visit a foreign country and trips to France and Spain where they will be given the opportunity to see first-hand the culture of the country and experiment with the language.

Students learn both French and Spanish. They follow the Pearson 'expo' course for French and Pearson 'Mira' course for Spanish. Students are taught to communicate in real life situations and travel to Europe enables them to practise the language learnt in the classroom. Some of the topics covered enable students to describe themselves, family members, free time activities, their local area and school. They learn to describe their plans for the future and express and narrate events in the past.

At the end of Year 9 students are given the option of either studying French or Spanish and may choose to follow an EBacc path.

Students follow the OCR specification for languages. They are assessed throughout the two years via a number of Controlled Assessments and examinations.

Both Spanish and French are divided into 4 assessed elements: 30% Speaking, 30% Writing, 20% Reading and 20% Listening. Students studying the course from 2016 will still focus on the same topic areas however they will be assessed by 4 evenly weighted examinations at the end of the course in Listening 25%, Speaking 25%, Reading 25%, Writing 25%.
