GCSE Maths

Course Title: Mathematics
Exam Board: Pearson, Edexcel
Qualification: GCSE

About the Course

Mathematics is a core subject that all students study at GCSE. The aims of this course are to further develop a rich knowledge and understanding of mathematical models and concepts as well as large skill set which enables students to use this knowledge in unfamiliar situations. We also aim to further students ability to acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems and to be able to draw conclusions and reason mathematically. Further to this, we push for students to communicate mathematical information effectively in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

There are two tiers within Mathematics that students can be entered for, Foundation (Grades 1-5) and Higher (Grade 3-9), with the difficulty of material being the only difference. The same strands are assessed across the two tiers and these are:

1 Number (22-28% on Foundation Tier, 12-18% on Higher Tier)

2 Algebra (17-23% on Foundation Tier, 27-33% on Higher Tier)

3 Ratio, proportion, and rates of change (22-28% on Foundation Tier, 17-23% on Higher Tier)

4 Geometry and measures (12-18% on Foundation Tier, 17-23% on Higher Tier)

5 Probability and Probability (12-18% on Foundation Tier, 17-23% on Higher Tier)

Assessment Overview

This course is 100% examined and this is made up of three papers, all equally weighted, each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes and has 80 marks available and the content for each tier will be examined across the three papers. There are a range of question styles across the papers and can be set in both mathematical and non-mathematical contexts, Paper 1 is the only non-calculator paper of the series and a scientific calculator can be used for Papers 2 and 3. Students will receive a grade from 1-9 on the overall result of all three papers, each individual paper is not graded.

There are three assessment objectives in Mathematics:

  1. AO1 is about using and applying standard techniques (worth 50% on Foundation Tier and 40% on Higher Tier)
  2. AO2 is about reasoning, interpreting and communicating mathematically (25% Foundation Tier and 30% Higher Tier)
  3. AO3 is about solving problems in mathematics and other contexts (25% Foundation Tier and 30% Higher Tier)
